Jonathan is a PhD student in Epidemiology at the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics with a great background in the sciences. He studied his bachelor's degree at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa where he majored in Biochemistry and Genetics. Jonathan went on to pursue his graduate studies at the University of Pretoria where he did an honor's degree in Human Cell Biology and eventually his master's degree in Anatomy. At that stage, the bulk of his research was on antibiotic resistance, particularly on the evaluation of novel multi-functional peptide-based antimicrobial compounds for use against highly resistant pathogens. Additionally, Jonathan also worked on some cancer biology studies that focused on the knock-down of a protein overexpressed in metastatic breast cancer cell lines. Beyond this, Jonathan is passionate about healthcare advancement in Africa and shifted gradually to work in global health.
Before his time at MSU Jonathan worked in number of large population health projects including a multi-center African Pediatric Surgical Outcomes Cohort Study and quite recently as a Study Coordinator at Doctors Without Borders on an innovative study that fed into a novel health intervention focused on adolescents, youth and key populations in Coastal Kenya.
Away from all of this, Jonathan is a drummer and enjoys a good jam!
