Dr. Catalina Picasso is a veterinarian and epidemiologist, specializing in infectious diseases in both livestock and wildlife animal populations. She obtained her DVM degree in Uruguay and worked developing animal health control programs in Uruguay for 10 years. In 2016, she pursued her master's degree in infectious disease epidemiology, followed by a PhD in diagnostic epidemiology in 2019 at the University of Minnesota (UMN). After completing her PhD, she worked on capacity building, education, and research at the UMN. Dr. Picasso is currently an Assistant Professor jointly appointed in the Colleges of Veterinary Medicine and Human Medicine.
Dr. Picasso's research is dedicated to enhancing the utilization of diagnostic findings to elucidate infectious disease patterns and inform decisions on animal and public health control programs under the One Health framework. Her work focuses on zoonotic and zoonotic-potential diseases, particularly those that disproportionately affect marginalized communities and contribute to broader societal health and economic disparities. She has extensive experience in bovine tuberculosis, chronic wasting disease epidemiology at the domestic and international contexts, and the novel presentation of Influenza A in cattle. Her work is oriented to contributing to the development of animal health control programs and enhancement of overall health equity and well-being.
