Information for the Public

As of January 6, 2022, more than 27,000 people in Michigan have died as a result of COVID-19. Each of these deaths is a tragedy and it is important to learn why these deaths occurred as a way of preventing future COVID deaths. The Michigan COVID-19 Death Investigation was established to collect information and organize Case Review Committees, who will then identify contributing factors and make recommendations to help prevent future COVID-19 deaths.  While it is not feasible to investigate every death, much can be learned by thoroughly reviewing a random sample of cases to look for opportunities to improve the system of care for COVID-19 patients.  Committees will examine medical records and consider personal experiences in testing, healthcare, insurance, public health, and post-hospital care in developing recommendations for public health and healthcare providers.  It is the goal of this investigation to prevent deaths by improving how all COVID-19 patients are treated and cared for throughout Michigan.
