What is Department Research Day?

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics Research Day is an event designed to showcase the research and outreach work being led by the department’s faculty, students, and post-docs. The abstract submission and poster presentation process represents an opportunity for post-docs, undergraduate, and graduate students to present their research and connect with colleagues. This event will provide a supportive environment to practice your presentation skills and build research collaborations across the department, college, and university.

STUDENT ABSTRACT/POSTER Submission Guidelines

Why Student Abstracts?

The department encourages the submission of research abstracts from students (graduate students, undergraduate students, post-docs) who are working with department faculty. All topics and subject matter are eligible. Students with accepted abstracts will be expected to prepare and display their work as a poster or potentially may be asked to give a short oral presentation. You will receive notice of whether your abstract is accepted (and whether it will be presented as a poster or oral) 1 month before the Research Day.

Abstract Formatting:

Abstracts should be submitted as a PDF document.

  • Epidemiology/Public Health project abstracts should include the following five sections: Background, Objective, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.
  • Biostatistics/Methodology project abstracts can be unstructured but they should include a succinct description of the project motivation, proposed solution, an illustrative example and/or simulation settings and results, and a summary of the paper's contribution.

Limit the abstract to 300 words, excluding title, authors, affiliations, and acknowledgments.

Abstracts can include either one table or one figure.

Do not include references. Abbreviations should be kept to a minimum; define all abbreviations the first time they appear. Students should ensure that all persons listed on the author line have approved submission of the abstract. Preference should be stated as to whether you prefer a poster presentation only, oral presentation only, or either.

Abstract Submission and Review Criteria:

Abstracts will be graded according to its novelty, methodological rigor, public health importance, clarity of writing, and compliance with the submission/formatting guidelines.

Final Poster formatting/printing

Details regarding format and size will be provided at the time of acceptance.
