In that study, tampons were laboratory tested for 16 metals, and 12 metals were found in all tampons tested, including lead, cadmium, and arsenic. The FDA has commissioned an independent literature review and initiated an internal laboratory bench study to evaluate metals in tampons.

The study, published in Environment International, was conducted by researchers at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, UC Berkeley School of Public Health, and Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Funding was provided by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences; the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute; and the National Institute of Nursing Research, National Institutes of Health.
