Claudia Holzman, DVM, MPH, PhD is an Emeritus Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Michigan State University (MSU). Dr. Holzman received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Michigan State University in 1976, her Master of Public Health degree from the University of Minnesota in 1986, and her PhD degree in epidemiology from the University of Michigan in 1996.
Dr. Holzman joined the faculty at MSU in 1994, became a founding member of the Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics in 1997, and led the Department as Chair from 2012 to 2018 – the first female to serve in this role. Throughout her career, Dr. Holzman exemplified conduct of rigorous scientific research with the goal of improving women’s health. She initiated the Pregnancy Outcomes and Community Health (POUCH) pregnancy cohort study in 1998, which prospectively recruited over 3,000 pregnant women from five Michigan communities and was supported by funds from the National Institutes for Health (NIH), the March of Dimes Foundation, the Thrasher Foundation, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). To date, the POUCH Study has yielded more than 80 publications that provide important scientific insights into social and biologic pathways to preterm delivery and later-life women’s health.
Dr. Holzman also made a tremendous impact on the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, the College of Human Medicine, and the fields of epidemiology and public health more broadly through her unique dedication to recruiting and mentoring junior scholars—from undergraduates through junior faculty. Dr. Holzman spearheaded the development of an undergraduate minor in Global Health and Epidemiology at MSU; she trained and mentored many masters, doctoral, and postdoctoral scholars who have gone on to careers in academia and at prominent medical and public health institutions, including the NIH and CDC; and she was Principal Investigator of the NIH-funded Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) at MSU.
In honor of Dr. Claudia Holzman’s important and lasting impacts on both the science and career development of scholars in this field, the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics will host this named seminar each year to feature an exemplary scholar in women’s and reproductive health. We are delighted that noted women’s health researcher, Fasil Tekola-Ayele, Ph.D. from NIH, will participate as the inaugural speaker for this yearly event.
